Mel Cooper joins David Foster Foundation board as honorary director
Victoria, BC – A long time Victoria philanthropist has been named honorary director to the David Foster Foundation Board. Mel Cooper has accepted the role of special advisor for fundraising initiatives for the Foundation which provides financial assistance to families of children undergoing organ transplants.
“For over 20 years, Mel has been such a big supporter of the foundation in the capacity of former director of the board, and a major contributor to our fundraising campaigns. I am really happy that he’s decided to join our board as an honorary director,” said David Foster, Chairman and Founder of the Foundation.
Mel Cooper, best known for his long career in broadcasting, has helped thousands of non-profit organizations over the years through his radio stations and his own philanthropic endeavors.
Many British Columbians will remember Mel as the vice-president of Expo ’86. In that role, he developed a hugely successful corporate sales plan that raised a record $174 million. Mel is currently chair of the TELUS Victoria Community Board.
“I am thrilled to be working with Mel on our upcoming major gifts campaign in this capacity as he truly understands philanthropy,” said Mike Ravenhill, CEO of the Foundation.
Mel received the Order of British Columbia in 1992 and became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1989. He was also the chair of the board of governors of the 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games and the chair of the 2008 United Way campaign in Victoria.
About the David Foster Foundation:
The David Foster Foundation provides financial support for the non-medical expenses of Canadian families with children undergoing life-saving organ transplants.
The foundation provides families with travel and accommodation expenses when they have to travel away from their homes to a city that can provide for their child’s transplant or medical needs. During the transplant period, families can be away from their homes for months on end. The foundation helps with expenses like mortgage or rent, utilities and food so families can return after being away during the transplant period with their homes intact.
Despite best efforts, each year, more than 200 people die while waiting on transplant lists across the country and many of them are children. Becoming an organ donor is an important role and one which the David Foster Foundation champions with its mantra, “Be a Donor, Save a Life.”
